Map of the Spirit® divides human spiritual development into four sequential stages—the Pre-awareness, Awareness, Commitment, & Union Stages. All of us, regardless of our spiritual beliefs, pass through these same four stages. Your current stage of spiritual development tells you where you are in the course of your spiritual development.
At the Pre-awareness Stage, at the start of your spiritual development, you have no awareness regarding your spiritual beliefs. During this stage, the main task is to explore your spirituality and potential spiritual beliefs.
At the Awareness Stage you have some awareness of your spiritual beliefs but have not yet internally committed to follow or live them out. During this stage, you deepen and expand your spiritual awareness and construct your spiritual beliefs.
At the Commitment Stage you internally commit to follow or live out your spiritual beliefs in one or more aspects of your life. (This doesn’t mean that you’ve actually manifested or lived out your spiritual beliefs yet, just that you’ve internally committed to do so.)
At the Union Stage you actually manifest or live out your spiritual beliefs in one or more aspects of your life. “Walking your talk” & living out your spiritual beliefs in thought, word, or deed is different (& usually more difficult) than just internally committing to do so (Commitment Stage).
Your current stage of spiritual development tells you where you are in the course of your spiritual development. Before determining your current stage of spiritual development, let’s review your prior spiritual experiences.
Everything we know, or think we know, about spirituality can be traced back to spiritual experiences, either our own or those of others we trust. Map of the Spirit® divides spiritual experiences into three types—Awareness, Commitment, & Union Experiences—each associated with the stage of spiritual development of the same name.
- Awareness Experiences—give you information about what you believe spiritually.
- Commitment Experiences—involve an internal commitment to follow or live out your spiritual beliefs during the experience.
- Union Experiences—involve the actual manifestation or living out of your spiritual beliefs during the experience.
List your prior spiritual experiences & note their type in Question #5.
|5. List & briefly describe any experiences you have had that increased your awareness of your spirituality or your relationship to it. Try to determine whether these experiences were Awareness, Commitment, or Union Experiences.|
CURRENT STAGE OF SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT
Your current stage of spiritual development usually correlates directly with your highest type of spiritual experience. But to be sure about your current stage, answer Question #7.
| 7.1 Do you have any knowledge or awareness about what you believe in spiritually?
Pre-awareness Stage Awareness Stage or higher
(GO ON TO QUESTION #7.2) (GO ON TO QUESTION #7.3)
7.2 Have you internally committed to following your spirituality, deciding to let it take priority over your or your ego’s desires, in one or more aspects of your life?
Awareness Stage Commitment Stage or higher
7.3 Have you manifested or lived out your internal commitment to your spirituality in at least some aspects of your life?
Commitment Stage Union Stage
If you’re not sure about your current stage of spiritual development, you may be at a “mixed” stage—with different aspects of yourself at different stages (this is especially common between the Commitment & Union Stages). If you’re at a “mixed” Stage, try to determine which aspects of yourself are at which stages.
