The Balance between Seeking & Resistance

In Holistic Medicine, your body, mind, & spirit all affect your health. Until now, however, we’ve had no way to determine how much spirituality is affecting your health. The first of Map of the Spirit®’s two main concepts – the Balance between Seeking and Resistance – addresses this problem.

In Map of the Spirit®, your rate of spiritual progress is determined by the balance between two fundamental forces –Seeking (the forward-tending force in your spiritual development) & Resistance (the force that opposes Seeking).

SEEKING

Your degree of Seeking is your overall interest in spirituality. To determine your degree of Seeking, answer the simple question below (Question #1 of the Questionnaire). 

 1.  How important to you are matters concerning spirituality?  (Define “spirituality” broadly—as whatever you believe does or doesn’t exist that’s greater than or beyond humans or the purpose and meaning of your life.)

RESISTANCE & SPIRITUAL SATISFACTION

Seek ResistanceResistance opposes Seeking. Map of the Spirit® assesses your balance between Seeking & Resistance by your degree of Spiritual Satisfaction.  When Seeking exceeds Resistance, your spiritual development tends to progress & your Spiritual Satisfaction will be high (right).  On the other hand, when Resistance exceeds Seeking, your spiritual development tends to be stuck or blocked & your Spiritual Satisfaction will be low (far right). Determine your degree of Spiritual Satisfaction by answering Question #2.

 2.  How satisfied are you with the extent to which you have been able to explore or pay attention to matters concerning spirituality, to date?

The lower your Spiritual Satisfaction, the more likely it is that Resistance is blocking your Seeking & the more important it is for you to identify & eventually address this Resistance. Resistance arises either from outside or within yourself (External or Internal Resistance, respectively). Sources of External Resistance include family, friends, work, school, & time or financial constraints that hinder your spiritual pursuits. Sources of Internal Resistance include psychological conditions, such as fears, neuroses, prior wounding, anxiety, & depression, that make it harder for you to accept & live out your spirituality. Identify your main sources of Resistance in Question #3.

 3.  What blocks or holds you back from exploring or paying attention to matters concerning your spirituality?

SPIRITUAL STRESS

Spiritual Stress occurs anytime your current Spiritual Satisfaction is less than your interest in spirituality (Seeking). Put another way:

Spiritual Stress = Seeking – Spiritual Satisfaction

Calculate your degree of Spiritual Stress in Question #4.

 4.  Calculate your degree of Spiritual Stress by taking your degree of Seeking (Question #1) and subtracting from it your degree of Spiritual Satisfaction (Question #2). Degree of Spiritual Stress:

SpStressiritual Stress adds to your physical & mental stress to determine your overall level of stress (right). Your overall level of stress influences your risk of developing many stress-related diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, anxiety, depression, and autoimmune diseases.

Spiritual Stress tells you how much spirituality is affecting your health. The greater your Spiritual Stress, both absolutely & relative to your physical & mental stress, the more spiritual matters are (negatively) affecting your health & the more attention you should give to treating your spirit.

Your Balance between Seeking & Resistance tells you how much spirituality is affecting your health. Map of the Spirit®’s second main concept, the Four Stages of Spiritual Development, tells you where you are in the course of your spiritual development.
