What is Map of the Spirit®?

Map of the Spirit® is a radically new approach to human spiritual development & the connection between spirituality & health. Rather than trying to tell you what to believe, Map focuses on the process of how you determine & then live out your spiritual beliefs—the process of your spiritual development. Map reveals that this process is universal, with all of us, regardless of our particular spiritual beliefs, passing through the same Four Stages of Spiritual Development & having our rate of spiritual progress determined by our Balance between Seeking and Resistance

Is Map of the Spirit® a religion?

No. Map of the Spirit® is a universal framework of human spiritual development. It does not tell you what to believe but rather focuses on the process of how you determine & then live out your own spiritual beliefs. Anyone, of any faith, can use Map‘s framework to understand their Balance between Seeking & Resistance & current Stage of Spiritual Development. With this information, anyone can determine how much spirituality is affecting their health, where they are in the course of their spiritual development, & how to treat the spiritual roots of their disease.

What are Map of the Spirit®’s main concepts?

Map of the Spirit® has two main concepts:

1. The Balance between Seeking & Resistance—The pace of your spiritual development (how fast you tend to progress or not) depends on the balance between two forces—Seeking, the forward-tending force in your spiritual development, & Resistance, the force that blocks or holds back Seeking. You determine your degree of Seeking in Question #1 of the Questionnaire & your main sources of Resistance, both External & Internal Resistance, in Question #3. Map of the Spirit® assesses your balance between Seeking & Resistance through your degree of Spiritual Satisfaction in Question #2.

The lower your Spiritual Satisfaction, the more likely it is that your Resistance relatively exceeds your Seeking, blocking or holding back your spiritual development. Imbalances between Seeking & Resistance are addressed through spiritual interventions to increase Seeking or decrease Resistance, as discussed in Treatment of the Spirit.

2. The Four Stages of Human Spiritual DevelopmentMap of the Spirit® divides human spiritual development into four sequential stages of spiritual development—the Pre-awareness, Awareness, Commitment, & Union Stages. Each of these stages describes a deeper awareness of & relationship with your spirituality, as you evolve from determining your spiritual beliefs (Pre-awareness & Awareness Stages), to internally committing to follow them (Commitment Stage), to finally manifesting & living them out (Union Stage).

Everything we know, or think we know, about spirituality can be traced back to spiritual experiences, either our own or those of others we trust. Map of the Spirit® divides spiritual experiences into three types—Awareness, Commitment, & Union Experiences –each associated with the stage of spiritual development of the same name. Your spiritual experiences serve as markers to delineate between stages of spiritual development. Map of the Spirit® helps you determine your current stage of spiritual development first by reviewing your spiritual experiences in Question #5 & then guiding you through a simple step-by-step process in Question #7.

How does Map of the Spirit® explain the connection between spirituality & health?

Your overall level of stress affects your risk of developing a wide variety of stress-related illnesses, such as heart disease, cancer, asthma, allergies, migraine & tension headaches, anxiety, depression, & autoimmune diseases. Spiritual Stress adds to your physical & mental stress to determine your overall level of stress. You calculate your degree of Spiritual Stress in Question #4 of the Questionnaire by taking the difference between your degree of Seeking & your degree of Spiritual Satisfaction. In essence, any time your current Spiritual Satisfaction is less than your current interest in spirituality (Seeking) some degree of Spiritual Stress exists.

Your degree of Spiritual Stress tells you how much spirituality is affecting your health. The greater your Spiritual Stress, both absolutely & relative to your degree of physical & mental stress, the more spiritual matters are (negatively) affecting your health.

How does Map of the Spirit® use the term spirituality?

Map of the Spirit® uses the term spirituality in a very broad sense—as whatever you believe does, or does not, exist in the transpersonal realm, beyond human experience.  From this perspective, everyone has “spiritual” or transpersonal beliefs. Some individuals believe that “something” exists in the transpersonal realm, beyond humans.  For example, theists believe in the existence of God(s) & non-dualists believe in a transcendent “One.” Even atheists, nihilists, & most existentialists have “spiritual” or transpersonal beliefs—they just believe that “nothing” exists beyond humans.

Map of the Spirit® presents a common framework by which we all construct our own spiritual or transpersonal beliefs. Regardless of whether you’re a theist, non-dualist, atheist, existentialist, agnostic, or even if your spiritual beliefs defy classification, Map‘s framework of human spiritual development lets you determine how much spirituality is affecting your health, where you are in the course of your spiritual development, & how to treat your spirit and the spiritual roots of your disease.

How hard is it to use Map of the Spirit®?  How long does it take?

Once you understand the concepts of Map of the Spirit®, applying them is remarkably simple. It takes only a short time, usually less than 10 minutes, to fill out Map‘s Questionnaire. This simple questionnaire-based format helps you understand, in remarkably little time:

     • How much spirituality is affecting your health

    • Where you are in the course of your spiritual development, &

    • How to treat your spirit and the spiritual roots of your disease

What you do with your answers to these questions is up to you. You’ll have to determine how much time & attention you want to devote to your spiritual development. But if you want to advance spiritually, you’ll be amazed at how much the information from Map of the Spirit®’s Questionnaire & the therapeutic approach presented in Treatment of the Spirit can heal your spirit & possibly heal your disease.
